PeeRee Project

Let us draw a world map together.

This is a social cooperation project. We thought that it might be interesting to see what a collection of mobile devices are capable of doing. Of course we do not need another map of the world. But this one will be different.

It will show us, on what locations on earth we had a mobile Apple device. It is not a map of lands and seas but it is a map of technology. We expect to have a lot of points submitted from seas and lakes whereas there will not be too many submissions from deserts, glaciers and uninhabited parts of the world. We are also curious how our map will look like at the end.

We are planning to make a video of how the map evolves to see which parts of the world will be mapped first.

About the name

PeeRee is named after Piri Reis. He is a Turkish sailor lived between 1465 and 1555. In 1929, a map has been discovered while Topkapi Palace is being converted to a museum. Map shows very accurately the African and South American coasts and it was the most accurate map of its time. Also Piri Reis claimed that parts of his maps are based on other maps drawn by Columbus and this raised questions if the lost maps of Columbus are also in Turkey.

Erich von Daniken, in his contraversial book Chariots of Gods claimed (more or less) that aliens have visited earth and taken Piri Reis in their spaceship to show him the world from space and this is how he had been able to draw such a map. Daniken claims that the map shows the curvature of the earth as if the cartographer is looking at the earth from a distance.

The map is still in Topkapi Place Museum collection.

We though that it is a nice joke to associate a cartographical project that uses the most advanced mobile devices of our time is named after the most advanced map of the world from 15th century.
